The WEXIT and 51STATE plates nod toward Alberta separatist sentiments that grew in 2019 amid Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s re-election, while QAN0N and QSENTME promote the far-right QAnon conspiracy theory that has recently gained prominence in the United States. Other proposed plates that allude to social issues also failed to get the green light. Another recently rejected plate, DR BS, may express distrust in public health during the pandemic. Among the nixed plates were some references to the COVID-19 pandemic, with seven Albertans attempting to remember the novel coronavirus with plates such as C0VID19, R0NASZN, C0VID V, THE VID and C0VID69.
